Welcome to Madonna University’s Accelerated Bachelor of Science in Nursing (ABSN) site in Southfield, Michigan. Take a virtual tour with site director Jennifer Murray to learn about the Madonna ABSN student experience.

In skills labs, students practice their foundational nursing skills alongside peers and professors. These labs contain manikins that help students work on these skills in a realistic environment.

“It’s set up just like a hospital, wing or hospital room,” Jennifer says. “So they get to feel comfortable in a hospital environment if they don’t have experience working in healthcare.”

Like skills labs, simulation rooms contain manikins that help students replicate real patient experiences. Here, students will face realworld healthcare situations and practice more advanced skills such as pediatric care, obstetrics, and decisionmaking. “All those situations are set up for students to have great learning experiences,” Jennifer says.

These practical experiences are essential for success in nursing and are a defining feature of Madonna’s ABSN program. Handson experiences improve students’ learning outcomes and help prepare them for work with actual patients.

Since the ABSN program is on an accelerated timeline, students complete their didactic coursework online in an asynchronous format so they can do their work whenever is best for their schedule. However, they must come to the site for proctored testing.

Jennifer says, “(the students) do the reading of their curriculum at home, and there’s a lot of flexibility for students who work their schooling around their life.”

The last critical component of the Madonna ABSN program is clinical rotations. This is where students will go to healthcare facilities to gain experience with actual patients, applying what they have learned from their coursework, skills labs, and simulation labs.
