Lost Locomotives Recreating A Clan and Gresley B17

cedarcam

Out of 10 clan Class locomotives built none were saved from the breakers yard There were 73 B17 Class and none of those survived either. Two gaps in our locomotive history are now being filled with the building of brand new ones using original drawings and where possible improvements to cure known problems with the original design. Many skills are being lost with the big decline in engineering, these builds are helping to keep and teach them to younger generation. Sadly sourcing suitable metals is one of the problems to overcome as our ability to make the high grade needed for axles has gone and these are being made in South Africa Other steel needed is being made in Italy, most steel is UK sourced however. The main focus on these builds is to get a locomotive capable of running on the min line so everything used has to be certified and approved materials. Thought is also being given to the way steam will be raised, already now new fuels are being trialled on existing locomotives, with a new build it will be easier to adapt the design to suit new fuels.
