I am a marine biologist with a decade of experience working hands on with marine mammals, including dolphins and beluga whales. Recently, I was asked to appear on Loch Ness Monster Conspiracy EXPOSED | History's Greatest Mysteries (Season 4) to talk about some of the theories surrounding the Loch Ness Monster. Here, I take a completely serious, scientific, and not at all immature look at the latest Loch Ness Monster theory.

For over a century, the legend of the Loch Ness Monster has been debated ever since the famed “Surgeon’s Photograph” became famous in 1934. Recently, and hilariously, a professor of molecular ecology at the University of Derby in the U.K proposed that Scotland’s iconic "Nessie" is actually a whale phallus. Could this be true? Is the Loch Ness monster real and if so... is it a whale? A marine biologist and whale expert weighs in and explains why it’s unlikely that there is an excited whale lurking beneath the waters of Loch Ness.

For starters, the legendary black and white photograph that appears to show the neck and head of a sea monster rising above the surface of the lake… is a known hoax. The man behind the photograph, Marmaduke Wetherell, was an eccentric filmmaker who had been publicly ridiculed for previously faking Nessie footprints. His son would go on to confess that they faked the photograph by using a toy submarine.

Second, the professor of molecular ecology who recently proclaimed the Loch Ness Monster to be a marine mammal member… confessed that this would be impossible since Loch Ness is a freshwater lake and there are only a handful of freshwater cetaceans. Whales and dolphins are also mammals, meaning they need to come up for air to breathe. This would lead to countless, confirmed sightings every single day.

However, he stands by his controversial theory when it comes to sea monsters. “Back in day, travelers/explorers would draw what they saw,” wrote Prof. Michael Sweet. “This is where many sea monster stories come from ie. tentacled and alienesque appendages emerging from the water – giving belief to something more sinister lurking beneath….however, many cases it was just whale...”
