After many years of friendship, Thomas Jefferson and James Monroe became neighbors when Monroe purchased property near Monticello in February of 1789. The two men shared many life experiences they both studied at William & Mary, were governors of Virginia, and served as Presidents of the United States, the 3rd and 5th respectively.
