Recovery from GuillainBarré Syndrome (GBS)
Massachusetts native Lenny Lamarre had COVID and then GuillainBarré syndrome (GBS) two weeks later, which resulted in paralysis. He spent five weeks in the Midstate Medical Center ICU and arrived at Gaylord, unable to move his legs and right arm and on a ventilator. After being weaned from the vent, Lenny began therapy to recover from the paralysis. Lying in bed, unable to move, he wondered what his life would look like. But he was introduced to Mary Kitchings, a Gaylord mobility aide, who'd had GBS years before and had a complete recovery. The duo shared many things in common each being one of seven siblings, and Lenny was inspired by Mary's strong faith, encouragement, and energetic spirit. If she had recovered, maybe he could too! At first, Mary helped care for and feed Lenny. Eventually, she took him to and from therapy. The pair formed a fast friendship as he recovered. Lenny followed in Mary's footsteps with an excellent recovery. He is now at home and hoping to return to work in December!
