The Constitution has never had its shortage of critics, famously scorned over the past few centuries by historical figures such as Thomas Paine, William Lloyd Garrison, and Woodrow Wilson. In Keeping the Republic: A Defense of American Constitutionalism, Boston College’s Dennis Hale and Marc Landy argue that taking these criticisms seriously is actually the first step toward understanding the Constitution’s virtues. By constraining the exercise of power, the Constitution sustains the foundation of a large, pluralistic, and rapidly modernizing society.
Please join AEI’s Yuval Levin for a conversation with Dr. Hale and Dr. Landy on how delving into the intellectual history of those who have emphasized the Constitution’s defects can help us better appreciate the brilliance of its design.
