Just newborn goat Eustis…that’s all.

I’m keeping today’s video simple. Some days are so heavy that they demand a return to what is most basic. So here is something beautiful and comforting at its core: A mama goat loving her newborn boy. The sweet murmurs and licks—reassurance that everything is going to be ok. They were meant for baby goat Eustis, but they worked their magic on me. Maybe they will be healing to you as well.

Cinnamon kidded early this morning with two babies. We knew immediately that one of them wasn’t going to make it. 16 years into living with goats, the loss part of it really never gets much easier. We know more, understand that we are not always in control and blame ourselves less, but knowing how unique each one of these joyful little creatures are, it is always difficult to lose one.

So today I focused on the small things. Reminding myself that even on hard days, there is always so much good in the world. Sometimes we like to simplify the complexity of love and loss, good and evil, joy and sadness into separate compartments, but nature always reminds us that neither operates in a vacuum and that all of these always exist at once.

I tucked myself into bed early tonight, worn out from the unexpected turns of the day. On the barn cam on my bedside table I can see baby Eustis and Cinnamon moving in their dark stall, settling in for their first night together. I can hear the peepers singing in the woods behind the barn. I am filled with gratitude and sadness, and somehow feel lucky that there is room for both.
