On 16 May 2000, Hollywood icons Julie Andrews and Elizabeth Taylor were made dames at an investiture ceremony at Buckingham Palace. Speaking to ITN after the event, Julie Andrews described the "thrill" of the occasion and shared the kind words Queen Elizabeth II said to her. Liz Taylor, meanwhile, couldn't really remember what the Queen said to her. The star said she went "blank" with awe during their interaction, describing the occasion as "the most exciting day of my life".
