In April 1941, Josef Mengele, a member of the Waffen.SS, after being wounded on the Eastern Front, was promoted to the rank of Haupsturmfürher and received four decorations including the coveted Iron Cross before being assigned as a military doctor to the Auschwitz concentration camp. During the 21 months he spent in Auschwitz, Doctor Mengele acquired his reputation and his nickname "the angel of death".
