BB&R Wellness Consulting

Join us every October at Georgetown University of our annual Achieving Optimal Health Conference! At this one day conference, we talk about how health happens inside the doctor’s office and inside hospitals. We also talk about how health happens at the grocery store, and how health happens when you talk to your grandmother and your child, and how the 35,000 decisions we make each day impact your health. Total health happens when we become educated on how to care for our own bodies, minds and spirit. Health happens when people are happy and it happens when we know what methods work best under what circumstances for both prevention and treatment.

In This Session:

Mindfulness and Optimal Health: The Challenge of a Lifetime and the Adventure of Living Our Lives as if it Really Mattered

In this talk, Jon will explore what might be meant by “optimal health” and whether it is a condition that one attains or a way of living and a practice that brings it forth in every moment to varying degrees, starting from where we are in this moment. He will discuss the value, discipline, and costeffectiveness of cultivating mindfulness in everyday life and the research supporting its effects in terms of enhanced quality of life, reduced stress, pain, and symptoms of chronic illness, and possible biological pathways for amplifying and optimizing wellbeing at the level of the brain, the genome, cellular aging, and in society more broadly.
Jon KabatZinn, PhD, is internationally known for his work as a scientist, writer, and meditation teacher engaged in bringing mindfulness into the mainstream of medicine and society. He is the Executive Director of the Center for Mindfulness in Medicine, Health Care, & Society at the University of Massachusetts.

Jon KabatZinn recruited chronically ill patients not responding well to traditional treatments to participate in his newly formed eightweek stressreduction program, which we now call MindfulnessBased Stress Reduction (MBSR). Since then, substantial research has mounted demonstrating how mindfulnessbased interventions improve mental and physical health—comparably so to other psychological interventions. The MBSR technique has spread to over 720 medical centers, hospitals and clinics around the world.

He is professor of medicine emeritus at the University of Massachusetts Medical School and author of numerous books, including Full Catastrophe Living, Arriving at Your Own Door, and Coming to Our Senses.
