Born and raised in the Mission district of San Francisco, Mendoza recounts how his mother became pregnant at 17 by his father, who left when he was just a year old. Due to his mother's struggle with heroin addiction, Mendoza and his two brothers were placed into foster care when he was just two years old. Despite his mother regaining custody when he was ten, she still struggled with heroin addiction.
