What you have here is the 3.6L n/a V6 aka the Pentastar

It’s been an icon in Jeep’s lineup, but icon also means it’s been around the block

You can also get a 5.7L hemi V8 in this trailhawk OR the 2.0T PHEV 4XE

The Pentastar engine is “fine” it makes 293 hp and 260 lbft, but that’s just the word I’d use to define it, “fine”. It’s not very fuel efficient, it’s the least powerful here, and it doesn’t sound very good. If it were my money I’d spec the wonderful 4XE system we tried in the Wrangler last year

No matter what engine you spec for the Grand Cherokee, you’ll get 8 gears

There is a sport mode which will hurry the gear changes and sharpen the throttle, but this is of course not a sports SUV

From there is where the Grand Cherokee starts to offer a more robust offroad suite than so many other unibody SUVs. You’ve got a true 4x4 system with a low range transfer case and we’ll get into that more on the offroad. What you do have on the road is the confidence of a full time 4wd

When it comes to suspension and ride, what we have here, Jeep calls their normal duty suspension which is exactly how it feels on the road

It’s not as stiff as some things with Bilsteins like the Bronco Wildtrack, but of course it’s not as floaty as a Rolls Royce

If it’s my opinion, i think it’s a nice balance or softness without feeling like you’re going to fall over in a corner

You do have A/T tires so you’re not going to take a corner at high speed anyway, but even with these tires, it’s a nice quiet ride in the cabin with good visibility

It’s a very nice ride given the tires and generally higher ride height. The vehicle will squat down with the air suspension at highway speeds and it all works together to be a very pleasant experience behind the wheel. What’s not as pleasant is the unpredictable nature of the “autopilot” depending on how you cancel your cruise, the radar will or won’t reengage…and then the active lane centering isn’t specc’d which I would want if it was my car…but anyway, that’s enough on the road, let’s hit the trails and put this thing in its element

The forest section is where the slightly shorter wheelbase of the 2row makes this Grand Cherokee a bit more agile. It gives you more options in terms of lines, you can avoid sharper rocks better, and so on…We can easily get through this in 4 high, but i’ve got the rear diff locked up for added traction and on the big tree trunk at the beginning i’ve got my from sway bars disconnected…all said and done this was easy for this thing..now onto the hills

The first hill is super easy from a technical perspective, but having the front facing camera on, which is available from the offroad pages really helps keep the car lined up while blind cresting the hill…approach angle 35.7 degrees, breakover 24.4 degrees, departure 30.2 degrees with a max clearance of 11.3 inches…end of the day these hills were cake for the trailhawk, and it liked getting a little bath at the end of the hills…now onto the moguls

The moguls are fun, and a good test to look at suspension travel and articulation. The Grand Cherokee is the only vehicle in this class to offer disconnecting sway bars which allows for more wheel travel and less load to be taken thorough the unibody chassis…no flex and no problem here…
