JeanMichael Basquiat Biography
Many people think that JeanMichel Basquiat (1960 1988), who was born in New York, was one of the most important artists of the 1980s and 1990s.

Basquiat tried out street art when he was a young adult. He was known as SAMO in the downtown art scene of New York City. In 1981, he was part of a groundbreaking show called "New York/New Wave" at MoMA's PS1 branch in Long Island City. During his short, highprofile career, the artist looked at issues like what it means to be black in America, the effects of colonization, and the effects of consumerism.
