Japanese badgers (Meles anakuma, family Mustelidae) and Japanese raccoon dogs (Nyctereutes viverrinus, family Canidae) alternately and repeatedly marking and countermarking beside a long dead branch on the ground around the deserted burrows of Japanese badgers to claim their own territory.
A juvenile Japanese raccoon dog apparently loved the scent of the fallen branch and indulged in rolling around on it and rubbing the side neck against it in order to transfer the favourite scent to its fur. On the other hand, however, the parent was indifferent to the fallen branch.
Captured from two angles with my old and new trailcams on mid and lateAugust 2023 in Japan.
