Of the several unmarried United States presidents only one was a lifelong bachelor who had never been married. While presidents such as Thomas Jefferson, Andrew Jackson and Martin Van Buren were single while in the White House, 15th president James Buchanan was remained an unmarried man all the while until his death.

This has led to much speculation. While it was unheard for prominent and successful men of the time to remain bachelors it wasn't common, and it was very rare among U.S. presidents.

Early in James Buchanan life he was married to Anne Caroline Coleman, but the engagement was abruptly broken off for unknown reasons. Buchanan was deeply saddened by this and Coleman's death shortly afterwards.

Some suspect that Buchanan may have remained guilty and sorrowful over Anne Coleman for the rest of his life hence why he never married.

Others argue that he may have been asexual. This isn't hinted at by the fact that he and Coleman didn't display many noticeable signs of affection that would be expected in a romantic relationship. Buchanan had also made mention of the fact that if he were to marry his wife would need to accept that the relationship wouldn't be very affectionate.

A popular theory is that James Buchanan was actually a closet homosexual. The source of this speculation is his very close relationship with another bachelor named William Rufus King.

For over a decade the two lived together, attended social functions together and even shared mannerisms. Andrew Jackson jokingly called them Aunt Nancy and Aunt Fancy and others such as Aaron Brown noted their closeness.

King served as Vice President to fourteenth president Franklin Pierce but died only a month after being sworn in. Many letters between Buchanan and King were destroyed by their family members leading to even more speculation.
