Ayres Extemporae was founded by Xenia Gogu, Victor Garcia and Teresa Madeira, after their participation in the Collegium Vocale Gent Academy, and is a prizewinner at the #Generación SMADE in Spain and Biagio Marini Competition in Germany. The ensemble was born out of an artistic desire to push the boundaries on the use of bowed instruments in the realization of basso continuo, by experimenting with the combination of a fivestrings cello piccolo and a four strings cello in the continuo. This combination of the three instruments and the changes in the roles of each one of them led the group to revisit a wide range of baroque repertoire with a new perspective. The element of extemporisation is embedded in their practice, as fully or semiimprovised musical elements are introduced in their performances.
