Is a pay for deletion legal and what is the process?

Pay for deletion is absolutely legal to do.

This is where you call the collector and agree to pay them, and they agree to settle your debt (delete).

They have the right to keep the account on your report, but they must show it as a $0 balance.

If they don't, they need to delete it.

The process of doing a pay for deletion usually starts with you calling the collector and ask to dispute and settle with them.

They're excited to close an account and make money.

We recommend that you leave deletion out of the conversation until the end of negotiation.

If they don't agree to delete once you've negotiated with them, politely thank them and say you'll use that money to take care of other debts.

They may or may not agree to delete the debt off your report.

If you can, record everything you can when you're talking with the collector.

The best record of the agreement would be a letter in the mail, or even an official email with the agreement in it.

Make sure that you hold up your end of the deal with the collector.

If they don't agree to delete, check your credit reports after 30 days.

If they don't update your reports (after you told them that you dispute the debt), they've violated the FDCPA (Fair Debt Collection Practices Act).

Hope this is helpful to you.
