Form 1040 income tax returns can be amended by filing IRS Form 1040X. Amended tax returns are filed to correct mistakes made on an original return, and they can be filed for certain carryback claims.

In this example, we look at a married filing joint (MFJ) tax return where the taxpayers forgot to include one of their 3 children as qualifying children for the child tax credit on IRS Form 8812. The taxpayers filed an amended return to update Form 8812 and claim $6,000 of CTC rather than the original $4,000 of credits.
