An indication for antibiotic can vary from person to person. If a person has a systemic problem where has a congenital heart disease, has got a history of a cardiac problem where there is a blockage in heart, what we do is we prescribe antibiotics pre extraction, that is before extraction. The dosage can vary depending on the patient, the age, the body weight etc. Post extraction antibiotics are also given sometimes because if there are some residual infections which cannot be removed along with the tooth, and which the body needs to take care, an antibiotic is prescribed post extraction. However the indication for antibiotics is varied. So there is no hard and fast rule that the antibiotic is prescribed before extraction or there is no rule that you have to give after extraction. It totally depends on the medical history, the case history taken by the doctor and the doctor’s diagnosis of the problem and the kind of extensive extraction that is being done. So depending on the kind of extraction, the kind of patient, we prescribe the antibiotic. It can be before or after extraction.
