Get out your prepper notes and document these changes to ensure you have the right calculations for using calcium hypochlorite to disinfect water in an emergency. Jay Whimpey, P.E., President of The American Civil Defense Association, has run some calculations that suggest a higher amount of 68 percent calcium hypochlorite should be used to make a 6% solution. He recommends 1 1/2 Tablespoons per cup of water. The military standard is 1 1/2 teaspoons per cup of water for a 5% stock solution.
