IMAS salmon interaction research - seafloor time lapse

Follow
IMAS - Institute for Marine and Antarctic Studies

In the time lapse sequence shown here, images were captured every 30 minutes over 3 weeks. First, you’ll see that we released some salmon pellets that land on the seabed (light brown blobs), which are consumed by invertebrates like seastars and sea slugs, and fish like Jack mackerel and Rock cod. You’ll also see salmon faeces (darker brown/orange blobs) which are quickly consumed by organisms like polychaete worms and burrowing amphipods. The dark greyblack mounds and burrows are likely to be created by burrowing Ghost shrimp, while the white/grey crusting is a matforming bacteria associated with enriched sediments.
