IHS has expressed its commitment to improving the way opioids are prescribed to ensure patients have access to safe, longterm, chronic pain treatments that reduce the risk of prescription misuse, abuse, overdose, and diversion. IHS’s opioid strategy aims to:
i. expand access to prevention, treatment, and recovery services;
ii. expand harm reduction interventions including improving access to opioid overdose reversal medications;
iii. develop comprehensive and interdisciplinary approaches to improve management of acute and chronic pain;
iv. reduce the impact of perinatal substance exposure on future generations; and
v. develop better data extraction methods and metrics to support informed decisionmaking regarding pain management and Opioid Use Disorders.
This video, which reflects the views of and guidance from IHS, details the opioid strategy and each of the five aims, including the specific steps IHS is taking to address the crisis. Importantly, the video outlines specific actions that can be taken to make a difference in the fight against opioid misuse.
