In the snowcovered plains of northern Mongolia live the Tsaatan nomads. They rely on fishing to gain a meager existence, but the lakes in the taiga are shallow and the ice thick. So they have to come up with an idea to spot the fish and catch it.

Sticks, nets and a bunch of joyful experts: that’s all it takes to do it. It may not be the greatest catch, but they’re surely having fun. And if it ends with a family diner by the fire under the tent, what more could we want?

We followed these Mongolian fishermen in their methodic, unusual and peaceful fishing process. A fishing trip in Tsaatan territory…
