I visit Amapala (Tiger Island) off the Pacific coast of Honduras to see its beaches, commerce, restaurants, personalities and newest vacation home (Villas Dubon). To get to Amapala, you can take a dirt road for an hour from San Lorenzo, Valle, and leave your vehicle in one of several parking lots in the beach village of Coyolito. There are boats available and they will take you to the island for 25 lempiras ($1).

I explore Playa Grande, the center, the pier, and a house where Albert Einstein stayed when he visited Honduras in 1931. Some young people challenge me to a beach soccer game and I try curiles, snow cones, curil ceviches and fish. The whole time I think of the most intriguing thing about Amapala: almost no tourists come despite it being a paradise island.
