If you have a railway then you need sidings too for parking wagons and things when they're not being used. Mine happen to be in a polytunnel which doubles up as a drying shed when the wood chip wagons get parked in there. Getting the wagons onto the sidings, and then back on to the mainline later, means points and points mean prizes, of course! My points are singleblade points or, as I've learned to call them, kickswitches....
