This is an oldschool plumbing technique that was used before PVC pipes and pushtoconnect fittings were invented, it's a lead & oakum joint. Have you ever learned how to make a lead and oakum joint? I got a message from a plumber saying his company doesn't allow soldering on the job and that blew my mind! You may never need to make a lead and oakum joint but it is nice to remember where our trade came from and how everything was put together.
