Louis, 12 years old, son of a miner, goes down that day for the first time in the mine. He will remain a prisoner there for twentyone days, drinking his urine and eating up to the collar of his shirt to survive. During this time his friend Charles, son of the chief engineer of the Courrières mines, discovers that his father is playing the game of the Management which, to save what remains of the mine, is going to close the shafts by which possible survivors.

Louis will be one of the thirteen miracle victims of Courrières who finally find a way out three weeks after the tragedy. But the ordeal puts an end to the friendship of the two children. Louis now takes the side of the miners and refuses to reconnect with the son of the man who abandoned them. Everyone will now follow their destiny, forever regretting a friendship broken by the conventions of men...
