Norton vs TotalAV – two solid antivirus options I’ve compared before; but with all the changes and improvements, which one is better for you?

Malware detection

Starting with one of the most exciting and arguably important areas the scanning options and detection rates. You want an antivirus with consistent results, which also handles seamlessly. Seeing as scanning is something you’d do on a really regular basis, I decided to test each provider out. I planted 10 malicious files onto my device and ran a scan with each provider. The results? Norton took around 10 minutes to scan my whole device, but only detected 8 of the 10 malicious files. Whereas TotalAV took around 16 minutes to scan, but ended up finding all 10. While these tests aren’t as thorough as independent, it’s a great way for us to get a little perspective.

Independent testing

However, I shouldn’t leave out independent testing, this gives me an idea about a company's reputation, across many years. Doing a deep dive, they both nearly come in at a tie, but the Norton review was rated just a smidge better by independent testing institutes.

Norton was given 6 out of 6 points when it came to testing areas like: protection, performance and usability. Meanwhile, the TotalAV review scored slightly less with 5 out of 6 points in protection, and 6 out of 6 in performance and usability. Ultimately this earned Norton the Top Product badge, while TotalAV earned the Certified Badge.

What I want to note also, if you look back over previous years, in comparison, Norton is really consistent in this testing. The last time they got shy of top marks was April 2020, proving they are in fact a reliable option.

Norton 360 vs Bitdefender features

Realtime protection

Both Norton and TotalAV offer amazing realtime protection. Norton uses artificial intelligence to monitor and protect your device, plus they’ll warn you before clicking on malicious links and getting scammed. TotalAV, on the other hand, also offers excellent realtime protection by using advanced cloud scanning services to monitor any suspicious programs or activity. If any threat is detected, they’ll even send you a warning to tell you which action to take next.

VPN

Norton and TotalAV each offer a VPN included in their package, which is a great way to add an extra layer of security to your browsing experience. Norton’s VPN has some impressive features like an adblocker, autoconnect, and split tunneling. It automatically connects to the fastest server outside of your country, and thanks to its kill switch feature you can further safeguard your IP, in case your connection happens to drop. In my testing, TotalAV’s VPN showed some great speed rates that even competed against some of the fastest providers like NordVPN and Surfshark. They also have over 70 servers to choose from, in more than 30 countries. Quite generous for an addon tool.

Dark Web Monitoring

Now you guys already know Dark Web monitoring is a musthave for me. It checks for data leaks on the Dark Web and lets me know if any of my personal information has been found. While both Norton and TotalAV offer this in their package, I was a little disappointed that Norton didn’t pick up on a handful of breached emails I had during my testing. So I wouldn’t recommend this tool solely based on this feature.
