The small port town of Utoro in the Shari district of Shiretoko in Hokkaido is famous for hauling in the largest catch of salmon each year, with eight varieties caught in the Shiretoko marine area alone including chum salmon, pink salmon, cherry salmon, and king salmon, among other rare varieties. Visitors can watch fishermen offload the morning’s catch from fishing boats straight into the fish market for free at Utoro’s Salmon Terrace where fish are graded on sorting tables, weighed, and where brokers bid on the fish by the boatload before they are cooled in ice. After seeing the seafood haul, visitors can walk next door to Roadside Station UtoroShirietoku to eat a bowl of the freshest salmon possible in its affordable restaurant and the rest of the fish caught in the morning are dispatched to processing plants by midday, ensuring that they are shipped at the height of freshness!

The best part is is that visitors can also learn about the lifecycle of the salmon (and the region’s sustainable hatchling and release programs) and other Hokkaido native animals that can be found in Shiretoko National Park in the onsite Shiretoko World Heritage information center, a mustvisit tourist spot in the Shiretoko area!
