How You Can Be

Smokies Life

Welcome back to Great Smoky Mountains National Park. The park's priority remains focused on protecting the health and safety of its employees, visitors, and volunteers. Follow these tips to make your visit #SmokiesSafe.
1. DELAY YOUR TRIP IF YOU ARE SICK: If you’re not feeling well or have been in contact with someone who has tested positive for COVID19, please delay your trip. The Smokies sees more than 1 million visitors each month, May through October. Don’t put others at risk. Keep the #SmokiesSafe.
2. AVOID CROWDED AREAS: Start your day early to avoid crowds. If you get to a trailhead or overlook and the parking lot is full, don’t park along the road shoulder. Choose another destination. A full parking lot is a sure sign that the area is going to be too crowded for social distancing.
3. MAINTAIN SOCIAL DISTANCING: Maintain at least 6 feet between yourself and those around you. Unless, it’s a bear or elk, then maintain a distance of at least 50 yards. They need social distancing, too! With more than 800 miles of trail, there is plenty of room for visitors to safely explore. Choose a less traveled trail and see what you find. Hike #SmokiesSafe.
4. RESTROOMS MAY BE CLOSED: Pack in and out everything you need for the day, including water, snacks, and hand sanitizer. Many restrooms may be closed in the early phases of the reopening. Be prepared, not disappointed.
5. WASH YOUR HANDS: If restrooms are open, wash your hands and keep the area clean for all users.
6. MAINTAIN SOCIAL DISTANCING WITH STAFF AND VOLUNTEERS: If you see a park employee or park volunteer while visiting, remain 6 feet away while you ask your questions. Help us all stay #SmokiesSafe.
7. PLAN YOUR VISIT: Find out which campgrounds, picnic areas, and visitor center areas are open by checking the park's website (https://www.nps.gov/grsm/planyourvisi..., sending an email, or calling.
The park appreciates your attention in following this guidance so that they can keep the park safely open. Make your trip SmokiesSafe!
