How Why and What I Feed the Wild Deer that Live on our Homestead

Join me as I explain what, why and how I feed our local wild deer.
*Please read below for more info before you consider feeding your local deer.

*It is estimated that 50% of the deer population die each winter of starvation. As steward of this land all animals living here or passing through get my attention and care including the majestic deer.

Since the local deer in this area feed off grain fields all summer and autumn long their bodies are well adapted to eating grains without any problems. Also I rotate the feeding spots and change out the posts and boards I place the food on to keep transfer of illnesses to a minimum just as one would with a bird feeder.

*Please do your research before feeding deer.
*You might not want them eating your shrubs and getting use to your garden.*

Also If your local deer are known to cary disease or if they don’t have a chance to graze on grain in the autumn or if you only plan to feed the deer for a short time (which is dangerous to the deer) please do your research before feeding your deer or any wildlife.

2019/2020 this year I'm only feeding Bucky one of the twins Amber brought to me last year. Amber had been coming to our home since late 2016. She subsequently died just after hunting season in late 2018. Her fauns stayed close to the house after she went missing early last winter and this year Bucky has returned (bucks are solitaire deer and his sister would have joined with the herd) Bucky hops into the goat paddock and hangs out with them. He's obviously tame after being around me since he was just a few weeks old. I only feed my goat and Bucky barley as a herbalist I know how detrimental corn is to a ruminant's stomach. And while there's no shortage to food waiting to be fed to the animals, Bucky and the goats only get a cup or so twice a day. the rest of their diet is hay, pine and cedar bows, spring buds, cedar bark, young twig tips and the occasional apple or pear. Bucky is in good hands.

*Please don't feed corn to dear and keep the daily feed amount to a minimum so they don't become reliant on you and starve if yo stop feeding them or get bloat if they are fed too much.*
