I've heard so many artists, lecturers and teachers say they're "not thinking" when they improvise. I understand but I don't believe it to be entirely true. I also want to offer a different concept for playing "outside" the harmony – for me, it's a melodic consideration, not a strictly harmonic or theoretical one.
