How We Installed Our First Two Nucs in Our Hives

Transferring bees into their new home (the hive) is an exciting experience. My heart was definitely beating faster than usual when I transferred the frames from our nucs into our hives.

In this video, I want to share how we installed our first two colonies from their temporary home into our brandnew cedar wood hives.

While I did make a few mistakes that you shouldn't repeat (such as installing a queen excluder), I managed to find one of the queens.

As a rule of thumb when installing nucs, make sure you place the five frames you take out of the nuc in the middle of your brood box while maintaining the order of the frames. Specifically, that means keeping the brood in the middle and the honey or nectar frames on the outside.

This year, we'll be getting three packages of bees (instead of nucs), and we'll do another video that shows how we installed the packages.
