In 1999, in the midst of the NHL’s expansion blitz, the Atlanta Thrashers took flight, restoring NHL hockey in the Big A not two decades after the Flames up and left for Calgary. Before long, however, the Thrashers met the same sorry fate as their predecessors, with their persistent onice struggles, a devastating office tragedy, and an apathetic ownership group conspiring to leave Atlanta without an NHL team for a second time.
