How To WASTE A Great Character - Game of Thrones

There’s this scene in season 8 of Game of Thrones that I think perfectly captured what many fans were thinking about Tyrion Lannister for a long time “ I used to think you were the cleverest man alive.

Hey, I’m guilty of thinking something similar. Afterall, in seasons 14 in game of thrones, Tyrion did prove various times to be quite clever, and I think what made Tyrion so compelling to so many is that we got to watch Tyrion out smart, outwit, and out manuever several real players in Kings Landing. But here’s the problem with that, eventually Tyrion loses this game of wits, and that’s fine at first, and all the way to the conclusion of season 4, narratively this is pretty good stuff.

Great characters are often defied and their strengths prove to not be enough, and that’s where they typically are provided with what is called in writing circles “the all is lost moment,” and in this moment, the best character arcs are evolved and they have an epiphany or have some sort of come to God moment where they rediscover their strengths, and in some cases it can better serve the story to have the character saved by a predictable, yet forgotten outside force in Tyrion’s case he was saved by Jamie in season 4, either way the end result is the same in that they ultimately become vixctorious in whatever the given obstacle is. In season 4, the obstacle is merely surviving for Tyrion.

the lost meaning of Tyrion’s character truly begins. But lets back up, because I think the direction of this character may have been doomed long before we arrived in season 5. And obviously, we need to look at none other than Dan benioff & DB weiss. Because I think there are some moments very early on that mischaracterize Tyrion compared to the source material. And that’s where we are going to start this journey of a character Losing Meaning.
