How to use ModBus with an ABB ACS 510 or ACS 550 VFD Configuration settings are shown as well.

We show using ModBusPoll with the ACS510 as well as LabVIEW 2020 for the purpose of showing folks how they would write this in C or other languages. I show the "string" sent so we can see EXACTLY what was sent to the device.

BIG FAT QUESTION is why is there an OFFSET of ONE for the settings versus the registers used. Does not seem to be the PLC register thing...

Folks at ABB will say address 40001 and 40002 where they really should simply say the REGISTER is 1 and 2 because ModBus gives you the 40000 for FREE... You will want to just use Register 0 and 1 as we demonstrate to initialize the VFD and to set the frequency where we use 020000 for 060 Hz.

LESSONS.. Be POSITIVE sure to set the 53 and 98 series settings BOTH in the Local and Remote and after ANY change to those you must cycle the power.. As well, in this configuration I needed to short pin 8 to 10 ad explained in the video. I am POSITIVE there are BETTER ways to get the VFD spinning but this worked for me and I am eager to see what ABB creates after reading my rant...

The ABB ACS series of VFD's are made in at least 3 different countries and, so far, I have only seen devices made in China but their serial codes indicate made in the USA. (The FIRST number of the serial number tells them the country.. 3 is China and 2 is USA) If you ask ABB for help AND they discover the device was made in China they will not help you, which I think is utterly irrisponsable for a 20 BILLION dollar company. They will say the devices made in China likely have Bugs in the software (does not give you a lot of confidence???) but my OWN experience is they work just fine. I discovered how to use ths device by talking to the super helpful support staff, after opening a case, but I think they are not well trained and do not understand ModBus or even Rigisters as well as casting for the TYPES of variables. After reading a 216 page 510 manual and a 350 page ACS 550 manual I "Accidentally" got it to work and what you see here is how to do it.
My invitation to ABB is to publish a MUCH BETTER video than this one and share it. As well, create a simple QUICL MANUAL for using ModBus Poll with your VFD's. Go and copy what the folks do at Automation Direct, and teach some of your technical Wizards how to use these with ModBus Poll. Everyone will be better for it..
End or rant to the 20 BILLION dollar company...
