Tommy Grammer demonstrates a few training tips that will show you how to train Chesapeake Bay Retrievers. In this video, I discuss using your dog’s natural prey drive by training them using toys such as a ball. The two main focus points are rewarding your dog with the ball that aid in reinforcing obedience cues such as sit, down, and stay. I also cover how to get your dog to drop the ball when they bring it back to you. In the video, I am using exchanges with food to get the Chessy to drop the ball. Once your dog will drop the ball easily, you can fade out the food and just toss the ball again. The food is only used to get the dog to drop the ball. The real reinforcement comes from tossing the ball again.
Additional Information regarding training Chesapeake Bay Retrievers.
1) These dogs are true working dogs and need plenty of outlets to burn energy if you will not be hunting with them. Training with toys and teaching them to retrieve are excellent ways to burn off energy and train good behavior.
2) This breed can often be more aloof and protective toward strangers when compared to other retrievers as Labradors and Goldens. Make sure to socialize your Chessy so they learn to discriminate between friend and foe.
3) They are often very mouthy as puppies and need to be consistently redirected to appropriate objects such as bones and toys rather than human hands.
4) The breed bonds strongly to its owner and family and does not like to be away from them. They are usually up for anything as long as they can come with you.
5) Because most of the dogs in this breed are considered to be high drive dogs, leash training can prove difficult. Consistent training that focuses on teaching the dog not to pull on leash should be implemented at a young age ideally.
