How to test fuel pump with test lamp

Follow
Jorge E. Penagos P.

Testing the fuel pump with a test lamp is easy: you have to remove the rear seat cushion.

Then remove the cover that covers the fuel pump, loosen the fuel pump connector lock, then press the tab and with the help of both hands remove the fuel pump connector.

The test lamp is connected from one end to the chassis of the car, on a bolt for example, and the other end is connected to the cable to the terminal of the connector with a bright colored cable: orange or red as the case may be.

You ask an assistant to put the car's ignition key in contact and you will notice that the lamp comes on for two seconds and then goes off, this would indicate that the voltage supply is working correctly.

If this does not happen then check: Relay and fuel pump fuse (Fuel Pump Relay and Fuel Pump Fuse).

When you have voltage in the fuel pump connector you can connect it to the fuel pump.

Turn the ignition key back to the ignition position and you should hear a hum from the fuel pump for two seconds, this indicates that the pump is working.

If nothing happens then there is a fuel pump motor damage.
