It can be extremely challenging to know when your cat is in pain. Cats hide their pain very well it stems from their origins and their survival instincts. In the wild, a sick or injured animal is vulnerable to attack so survival can depend on the animal's ability to act like everything is fine even when something is terribly wrong.

Fortunately, there are some signs you can look out for that indicate possible pain:

1. Mobility changes and hiding. Cats experiencing pain often move around less and hide;

2. Changes in grooming habits. You may notice an overall decreased amount of selfgrooming in cat experiencing pain;

3. Bathroom changes cat that stopped using a litter box could be in pain;

4. Loss of appetite. Cats in pain often eat and drink less;

5. Sleeping a lot more and/or sleeping in only one position;

6. Changes in vocalisation;

7. Changes in personality, overall irritability and crankiness.

Don't ever give cats human painkillers! Cat metabolise drugs differently than most other species, so human painkillers can be toxic to cats unless they are given in the proper does and at the proper intervals.

While some pain is related to pain or injury that can be treated and resolved, in older cats the pain is often related to a chronic condition, such as arthritis.

Pain in cats can be caused by illness, disease, debilitating condition, injury, surgery, infection, inflammation etc. The general rule is if it is painful for you, it is painful for your cat!
