Chris from The Language House

Teaching beginners is a lot of fun that every ESL teacher should experience. In this video, we cover how to teach and present vocabulary (lexis) to the beginner level.

Welcome back to my series on teaching English to beginners. This is the second video in the series. If you missed video #1, do check that out here

Teaching vocab to beginners is actually quite easy (and fun) if you know what you are doing. We start the video with some general tips:
1. Decide what language you want to teach and make sure this language gets used throughout the lesson
2. Teach your language in clumps based on parts of speech
3. Color code all of your words
4. Write/board your language for them correctly
5. Find a logical order to teach the vocabulary
6. Remember to elicit everything and stick with visual elicits: props, realia, pictures, drawing, and miming

After that, we cover the actual steps needed to teach vocabulary effectively. You're going to want to elicit your word, board your word, drill your word (8x), and then CCQ your word. At the very end of your presentation, do a rapidfire check of all of your words before moving on.
The biggest piece of advice is to keep your TTT low don't speak. You're also going to want to drill a lot, and finally, move slowly through the entire presentation.
