There is a lot of bad information regarding the socialization of puppies. A lot of dog owners project their human needs for socialization onto their dogs and this is a big mistake. Contrary to popular belief, your dog doesn't need other doggy friends. He also shouldn't be expected to meet every dog you pass on the street (or any dog for that matter!)

When most of us think of socializing our puppies and dogs, we think of the dog park, and this is when the trouble starts. Dogs (and especially young puppies) should not be expected to interact with packs of unknown dogs in this manner. You will never find me at a dog park. There are too many out of control, illmannered dogs who can create very negative and damaging interactions that could leave your dog with lasting trauma.

The only interaction your dog needs is YOU

Creating a well socialized puppy and dog starts with a ton of exposure early on. Showing your dog lots of different pictures builds confidence and you are able to set behavioral expectations along the way, essentially "proofing" your dogs reactions and behaviors to the distractions of the world around him. Including other dogs and people!

Dogs definitely need relationships, I'd just rather it be with me than some out of control doodle at a dog park.... so let's stop humanizing our dogs and projecting our human wants and needs onto them! DOGS DON'T NEED OTHER DOGGY FRIENDS. Full stop.
