How to take care of a baby squirrel - Everything you need to know

CW39 Houston

This is a wonderful day to hold a baby squirrel! TWRC Wildlife Center joins us to discuss the benefits of squirrels. Squirrels help the native flora to thrive by dispersing nuts and seeds, allowing plants and trees to be planted and sprout.

The Eastern Gray Squirrel is the most common species by far in our area. They are mostly gray in color with some light tan coloring or 'brownish wash' in their overall fur and a white belly.

A Fox Squirrel Has reddishcolored fur on their bellies, legs and tail underside, with a 'grayish wash' fur color on the head, back and undersides of their tail. They are larger, with a heavier looking body than the Eastern Gray.

The Flying Squirrel is most rare species found in our area. They are mostly a browngray color with a 'reddish wash' throughout the fur. They are much smaller, with very large eyes (because they are strictly nocturnal), and longer tails, used to help provide stability in flight. They also have a patagium, a furred membrane that stretches from their wrists to their ankles, which acts like a parachute and allows them to glide, rather than fly from tree to tree.

What should you do if you find a baby squirrel? Nothing! They don't actually need help and it's best to leave them alone as long as the parents are nearby and watching out for the baby.
