➡When to start:
It is recommended to start at 6 months of age and showing signs of readiness: sitting up unsupported, good head control, being able to reach and grab and show interest in food. We don’t want to rush starting solids as baby’s digestive system needs time to develop

➡What foods to start with:
Babies who are exposed to a variety of foods early on are more likely to prefer these foods later in life. Our baby’s favorite first foods are: carrots, avocado, sweet potato, chicken drumstick, butternut squash, broccoli, and fresh fruits. Avoid overly salted foods, raw foods, honey and food with added sugar

➡What about pureed foods:
You can do BLW by feeding purees as well! Just pre load a spoon and allow baby to practice self feeding. This will help build the handeye coordination they need to eventually transition to finger foods. Its okay if you don’t feed comfortable offering finger foods at first, do what works for you!

➡What you’ll need:
Comfortable high chair with good support, plates and bowls with suction and an open or straw cup. You don’t need special equipment to make your baby’s food. A steamer, food processor, and oven are some things I use to cook a lot of my baby’s foods

➡How much to feed/how do I know if baby is satisfied:
Start with one meal a day. eating solids at first will mainly be for practice so try not to worry to much about how much they eat. Their main source of nutrition should still be breastmilk/formula until they're one year old. Remember learning how to eat is a process and it’ll take your baby some time to get the hang of it

➡Choking/gagging:
Gagging is normal when babies are learning how to eat. When babies are between 69 months they have a protective reflex against choking which means its safer to start them on finger foods at this age. Closely monitor baby when they’re eating and educate yourself on the different between gagging and actual chocking

Always consult with baby’s pediatrician before starting solids or if you have any concerns!
