Key Takeaways:
Verify Deck Moisture Level – Deck moisture content must be under 15% before stain application. Test using moisture meter to verify wood moisture content.

Setup Equipment Place a large drop clothe (12*15) under deck and place deck staining tools and equipment on top of drop cloth.

Sand Top Rail Using 5 inch makita orbital sander install 5 inch 100 grit sandpaper and sand top deck rail. Both crew members should be sanding top rail.

Mask Siding On siding near deck railings use a handmasker to protect siding from drips. Use 1.5 inch intertape and 72 inch 3M handmasker film to mask siding

Cover Deck Floor If entire deck is to be stained with TWP penetrating oil stain lay down one 12ft drop cloth to cover deck floor. This will protect the floor from stain if you were to drip stain while staining railings.

Cover Ground Surfaces – Ground surfaces (cement, brick) should be covered before a ladder is placed in position to stain or paint railings.

Mix Stain/Paint Prior to using paint or stain mix paint/stain with a stir stick. Stain settles quickly so whenever you open a new can of stain to use stir stain for several minutes and check bottom of can to verify all stain pigment has mixed thoroughly.

Railing Application
Stain With one person on outside railings and one on the inside apply stain with bravo stainer. Work together to make sure you do not get too far ahead of the other person so you can clean up each others drips. Stain boards from end to end whenever you can to avoid flashing. Top rail should be stained all at once and double coated wet on wet. Before moving onto the next section take a rag with some paint thinner soaked into it and clean plastic spindles off really well. Many times wood pulp will collect on the spindles especially if they are not rinsed well during the pressure wash. This wood pulp must be cleaned off.
Solid Stain If balusters are made of plastic you will need to mask off the ends of the balusters with tape to protect from paint. You will also need to check for flaky paint and remove with a hyde scraper and 5 in 1 as needed before application. Apply solid stain together working your way around the deck until all railings are completed.

Floor Application
Stain Place drop clothes under deck covering as much surface as you will be working on. Fill a one gallon stain can at least ¾ full. Bring two gallons of stain on top of deck for each crew member. Screw extension pole into bravo stain brush. Starting at the point furthest away from the stairs stain floor boards from end to end. We always apply transparent and semi transparent stains with two coats wet on wet. This means you will stain the first 8 boards then double back to first 4 boards and stain again. Then move to next 4 unstained boards and then previous 4 again. When using sikkens or semi transparent stains you reduce the amount of boards you stain at once. Only stain 4 boards max before doubling back to first two boards to 2nd coat. During stain application make sure you brush into the deck floor boards cracks to make sure the gap is saturated. As you stain flooring move drop clothes so they are directly underneath you covering any cement or patio from drips.
