The vast majority of people selling their homes in the United States do so with the help of a real estate agent. Real estate agents take care of much of the extra work involved in selling a home, but their help isn’t free: They’ll charge a “commission” that can consume up to six percent of the sale price.

It is possible to sell your home without a real estate agent, but you’ll have to do some or all of that extra work. Along with the forsalebyowner method, there are flatfee brokers and iBuyers. Depending on which alternative sales method you pursue, you may also risk the home selling for less money, or waiting longer for it to sell. On the other hand, you could save money by avoiding the commission, or selling it more quickly with an iBuyer.
