Sometimes we overlook the importance of rhymes. In this video, Berklee Online instructor Andrea Stolpe says that rhyming is almost a necessity in great songwriting, and in the same way harmony has all of its nuances and possibilities, there are countless ways in which you could connect two words with each other. Your rhyming creates a structure, a motion in your lyrics—but you can subvert the listener’s expectation by changing that same structure, by not rhyming when it’d be expected, or prolonging the execution of an expected rhyme. It’s also important to try letting the rhyme play a part in the story, and when it does, it can add so much more meaning and feeling to the whole piece. This video comes from the Berklee Online course, “Commercial Songwriting Techniques,” by Andrea Stolpe.
