Some common questions about how to upload music to streaming services? ↓

‍♀ Why can you not release music directly to Spotify, Apple Music, Instagram, and TikTok?
This is a common question I get. It would be nice if we were able to upload our music directly to these streaming services but unfortunately it's not possible. However, on tiktok, youtube, and soundcloud you can upload your music for free, no problem! BUT if you want your music to be available on streaming services then we need to use a music distributor. These music distributors, like Tunecore and DistroKid, help control the quality and information provided from the songwriters so everything looks good. Also, the music distributor you go with will collect your royalties for you and pay you money you make from Spotify, Apple Music, etc.

‍♀ Do I have to pay to upload music to Spotify, Apple Music, Youtube, Deezer, etc?
Yes and No. Most traditionally, you pay a fixed fee to a music distributor and they will get your music uploaded. In return, they collect your royalties and give you 100% of them. The fees can vary from $10.00 a single to $20.00 a year. Look into the music distributor of your choice. They will have a pricing page that lays out all this information. In the last few years there have been more music distributors that are offering free music distributor. Yes, free. That means they'll take your song and get it uploaded and in return you don't pay anything. Nada. However, what's the catch you ask? Well, when you start making money from the song. As an example, these distributors will take 5% to 15% of your royalties you make from the song. So if you make $100.00. You keep $85 to $95.00 bucks and the distributor pockets the rest. Is that a good deal? Yes, it could be if you're not getting many streams on your music. But it also could be very expensive if you are getting a lot of streams on spotify, apple music, etc.

‍♂ How long does it take for a music distributor to upload my song to Spotify and other platforms?
It usually takes between 510 days for distributors to get everything in order and then get your song uploaded online. However, every distributor is different. The big ones like Spotify and Apple Music are quite fast but I've noticed the wait times for Deezer, Amazon Music, and Tidal take a few days longer. What I would recommend is to plan your release date. For example, upload your song to your distributor about 4 weeks in advance. This will give them time to get your song uploaded and sent to the streaming platforms. Then you can rest assure that your song will be available on the day of your release. On the other hand, this prepares you from a music marketing perspective as well. You can tell your fans that you have a new song and the exact date it will be out, where they can find it, and what platforms it will be on where they can listen to it.

‍♂ What are the music distributors to get your song uploaded?
This will really depend on what your needs are. For instance, if you're looking for a simple and no fuss music distributor then I would recommend DistroKid as it's super easy and simple to use. On the other hand, if you're looking for a distributor that have robust features, like admin publishing, then I would recommend TuneCore. If you're looking for free music distribution then I would recommend someone like Amuse or UnitedMasters. Take a few moments and just browse the features and cost from each. At the core, every distributor will get your music uploaded to spotify, apple music, youtube, tiktok, instagram and hundreds of other places but they vary in terms of their cost and features so take a few moments to find out what is best for you.
