How to prepare and point old stonework

Follow
Silverline Tools

Builder and TV Presenter Craig Phillips shows you how to clean, prepare and point old block stone work.

Remove any vegetation that may be growing between the stones, use a cold chisel to chisel out any old mortar from around the blocks.
Brush out all the dust from between the blocks and using a sprayer lightly wet the surface ready for pointing. Mix up your cement and mortar mix adding your preferred colour.

Using a set of pointing trowels, push the mortar into the crevices around the stone blocks and leave to dry for approximately 15 minutes before gently brushing over the mortar with wet paintbrush to soften the edges.

After approximately one hour, use a soft brush to gently brush down the wall.
