Most mobile phone numbers form the larger carriers (AT&T, Verizon, Sprint, TMobile) can be ported to Google Voice, while it seems that only some prepaid phone numbers are portable.

The best way to determine if your phone number can be ported to Google Voice is to type your number and check at https://www.google.com/voice/b/0/port...

The porting process took me 24 hours with AT&T, but I suspect other carriers such as Verizon, Sprint, and TMobile will be just as quick.
