Play Catch to Become the Cookie
Ditch the food bowl and play with your dog instead! Delivering food like a pez machine is ok, but when you and your dog play with food, it’s far more exciting, interactive and rewarding. Over time, it’s like you become the cookie, even when you have no cookies, by building upon the foundation of mutual fun.

For example, catch is one game you can play with many dogs. In this video, I’m starting to teach Jager to catch at the age of 6 months. I use different types of food rewards, including cheese, pepperoni pieces, popcorn, tortillas, then a long length of pepperoni. The dog does not need to jump up to grab the food. Jager offers enthusiastic jumping up and I’m happy to play along. I don’t have a lot of expectations or rules, just trying to have fun together in a way we both enjoy. I try to make it as easy as possible by dropping the food directly into his mouth. Light, large tortillas are one of my favorites since they drop slowly and are easily seen so easily caught.
